World Cancer Day is a global observance that helps raise people’s awareness of cancer and how to prevent, detect, or treat it. The event is held every 4th of February. This day is seen to unite the world’s population to fight against cancer.

People, organizations, governments, and NGO work collectively on World Cancer Day to help the general public learn extra about the different forms of cancer, the way to watch for it, treatments, and preventative measures.

    GIVE A LITTLE ATTENTION TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

World Cancer Day is part of the World Cancer Campaign. It’s called for a strong alliance between researchers, health-care professionals, patients, governments, industry partners, and the media to fight cancer.  Cancer is the second leading cause of death across the world, and as deaths from heart disease decline, it's poised to assume the dubious distinction of becoming our leading killer.

Despite these grim statistics, doctors have made great progress in understanding the biology of cancer cells, and they have already been able to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. But instead of just waiting for new breakthroughs, you can do a lot to protect yourself right now. Get regular check-ups, including the screening tests that can help detect cancer before it causes any symptoms. For women between 15 and 35 it is advisable to get a periodic doctors examination.

Ways to prevent cancer:

Using any type of tobacco puts you on a collision course with cancer. Smoking has been linked to various types of cancer — including cancer of the lung, mouth, throat, larynx, pancreas, bladder, cervix and kidney. Chewing tobacco has been linked to cancer of the oral cavity and pancreas. Even if you don't use tobacco, exposure to secondhand smoke might increase your risk of lung cancer

Women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts might have a reduced risk of breast cancer. The Mediterranean diet focuses mostly on plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. People who follow the Mediterranean diet choose healthy fats, such as olive oil, over butter and fish instead of red meat.

Adults who participate in any amount of physical activity gain some health benefits. But for substantial health benefits, strive to get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity. You can also do a combination of moderate and vigorous activity.

Get vaccinated

Cancer prevention includes protection from certain viral infections. Talk to your doctor about vaccination against the viral infections.

Get regular medical care

Regular self-exams and screenings for various types of cancers such as cancer of the skin, colon, cervix and breast.
